# IoT beyond HACCP: what else your sensors could be measuring

Most people know IoT from digital HACCP — sensors in the fridges, automatic logs, no more handwritten sheets. It's the most mature use case, but only the beginning. The same infrastructure — small sensors, wireless transmission, a platform that understands the data — solves problems across the whole operation.

## Five scenarios that pay off

**Predictive refrigeration maintenance.** Beyond compliance: a fridge "working harder" to hold temperature draws more power and is preparing to fail. Its consumption curve gives it away weeks in advance — and a €100 service call beats thousands in spoiled stock.

**Energy.** Meters per line or per appliance show where the power goes — and where it leaks: air conditioning in empty rooms, equipment left on, out-of-hours consumption nobody can explain.

**Warehouse.** Humidity and temperature in storage areas — critical for food, pharmaceuticals, paper, electronics. An alert when humidity crosses a threshold costs almost nothing; ruined stock does.

**Access.** Doors opened out of hours, freezers left open, controlled-entry areas. Not cameras everywhere — simple, timestamped events with a notification to the right person.

**Levels and leaks.** Tanks, silos, gas bottles, water detectors in the boiler room. Whatever is checked today "whenever someone passes by" can report on its own tomorrow.

## From sensor to decision

The mistake we see most often: buying sensors before defining which decision they will change. The correct chain runs backwards:

First the rule ("if the freezer stays above −15°C for 20 minutes, alert the shift manager"), then the sensor that feeds it. That way every device has a reason to exist — and the system produces alerts that mean something, not noise that gets ignored within two weeks.

With a few months of data, AI enters the picture here too: instead of static thresholds, the system learns each device's normal behaviour and flags the deviation before the static limit trips. It's the difference between "it broke" and "it's about to break".

## What equipment you need

Less than you'd think. Modern sensors are small, run for years on a battery, and need no wiring. Hardware cost has collapsed — the real investment is the platform that turns readings into alerts, records and decisions. That's where IoT becomes a tool instead of an abandoned gadget.
